Purple Menagerie

This scene depicts an absolute banner year for the wildflower known as Elephant’s Head. This field at the base of Crested Butte Mountain is fertile ground for wildflowers. The abundant and dense blanket of blooms could clearly be seen while traveling the road that runs between Mt. Crested Butte and my home town of Crested Butte Colorado. Daily crowds of amazed onlookers parked their cars alongside the road each day to gaze at the extraordinary event! I was so taken by the breathtaking arrangement of wildflowers, wispy clouds and the profile of Crested Butte Mountain, that I created two paintings from this incredible scene- a small study called “Afternoon Delight” and the larger piece you see here.
