Dom Cathedral (Germany)- For the people of Germany, this cathedral in the city of Cologne is both a powerful reminder of a dark past and a miraculous beacon of hope for a brighter tomorrow. During the Second World War, bombs flattened the city. At the entrance to the cathedral there is a large photograph of the city after the bombing. In the picture, the cathedral can be seen rising up out of miles of rubble. It appears to be the only thing left standing. Today, the city has been completely rebuilt. In sharp contrast to the citys modern feel, the cathedral emanates a historical energy that clearly makes it the focal point of the city. Pen and Ink on paper lends itself nicely to contrasting elements of drawing. Thick and thin lines, light and dark colors, and large and small forms create a wide range of visual elements to keep the viewer actively involved in the experience of seeing the artwork.
